Roman Catholic Church during the Middle Ages
My ToonDoo represents the Roman Catholic Church because it shows their values and the way they ran Europe.
The church was not just the church in the Middle Ages, it was apart of the government. The church leaders were Lords and Vassals and also advised the King. The church had Bishops and Archbishops that sat in the Kings council that played leading roles in the government, so after a few generations started messing up it was hard for them to turn the church back around. The church was the center of the town, the piece that held everything together. The church came up with all of the rules and if you did not follow them not only did you lose your membership from the church, but also lost your political rights. And since the Roman Catholic Church was the only church in Europe at the time, that meant there was no where else the citizens could go. I made it so my ToonDoo shows all of the problems but expectations of the Roman Catholic Church. The reason the citizens are in black and white and the Priest isn't, is because it shows their value. The citizens in the Middle Ages had no power whereas the knights and Priests did. I made anything important in color. The hearts with the crown inside on the Knights chest represents their loyalty to the King and the sign around the Priests neck symbolizes his actual relationship with the King. They worked together and I would say they they would call each other "pals". The sacks of money show the 10% of all of the citizens income that they had to offer up to the church as "tithes". The church might of held the government together but it was very corrupt in the fact that they did not ask for the tithes but demanded them, so they were basically taxing their citizens. The monks started to become less and less "religious" by starting to have relationships and the priests began to marry. What started as a very christian like environment fell down to a very forceful business. The church might of shaped the live of citizens from all classes and the mix of religion and state could have helped for the better, but it didn't.
